JONESBORO, Ark. (10/28/11) – The Arkansas State women’s soccer team put an exclamation point on the 2011 regular season posting a 4-0 shutout over UALR Friday at the ASU Soccer Complex in their final regular season match of the year.
The Red Wolves improved to 7-9-3 and 5-5-1 in the Sun Belt with the win while UALR fell to 7-13 and 3-8 in league play. Their fifth conference win ties the school record for most Sun Belt wins in a season.
ASU scored in just the fourth minute (3:40) of the game when freshman forward Jena’ Kelley finished a shot inside the box to the left side, after the ball had been passed from Jessica Jingblad and Christina Fink.
Senior Lyndsey Patterson then scored back-to-back goals in the 12th (11:11) and 26th (25:12) minutes. The first was from the top of the box to the left side and the second was sent over the goalkeepers head from the left.
Senior Michele Clark put the exclamation point on the match when she took a feed from Kara Nitti and beat the keeper scoring an open net goal in the 83rd minute (82:42).
“It’s nice to finish the season on such high note,” said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. “UALR is a quality team and very well coached and we knew that they were not going to come in and just lay down. I am really glad that we are able to send the seniors off on a high note. We can look forward to the post season.”
ASU outshot UALR 17-15 but were outshot on shots on goal 9-8 by the Trojans. Patterson and Kelley led ASU with three shots each while Kristen Semko led UALR with four shots.
ASU is just one goal away from tying the school record for goals scored in a season (35).
Megan Stoltzfus and Bethany Kremer combined for the shutout as Stoltzfus had six saves and Kremer had three in the contest.
The Red Wolves will await their pairing for the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament which begins next week in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
