|Red Wolves Finish Fourth As Nelvis Earns Top Performer...|
LAFAYETTE, La. (5/13/12) - The Arkansas State track & field teams completed action at the Sun Belt Confernece Track & Field Championship finishing fourth on the women's side and fifth on the men's. Sophomore Sharika Nelvis was named the top female track performer at the meet after picking up four wins at the championship.
The women's team posted 101 points, while the men had 84.83 points.
"I thought our competitiveness and effort was much improved from the indoor championship, and we had some outstanding individual performances" said ASU head coach Jim Patchell. "We are a little short on depth right now but this meet was a great one to build on."
Nelvis added titles in the 100 meter hurdles (13.30), 100 (11.39) and 200 (23.49) to go along with her long jump title from Friday.
Kristina Aubert broke the Sun Belt Conference Championship and her own Arkansas State record by finishing the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:00.59. On the men's side, Bailey Bunyan was seventh at 15:17.18.
Solomon Williams was second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 13.92, while Joey Meyer was fourth in the 200 (21.58) and 400 (46.72).
ASU scored three times in the men's pole vault with Shane Heathcock coming in third at 4.86m, Ethan Sandusky reached the same height in a jump off for fourth, while John Ellis was seventh at 4.56m.
Julia Agawu was third in the women's hammer throw at 54.48m. Samantha Salinas was fifth in the women's 1,500 meter run at 4:46.38 while Chelsea Weaver was sixth at 4:46.61.
