JONESBORO, Ark. (7/24/12) – The Arkansas State men’s
and women’s cross country teams announced their 2012 competition schedules on
Tuesday, highlighted by five-regular season meets.
The cross country season will begin Sept. 1 in Memphis,
Tenn., at the Memphis Twilight run followed by a trip to Little Rock Sept. 7
for the UALR Invite. The Red Wolves will run a split squad Sept. 29 with its
top female runners competing in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic,
while the remaining female runners and men’s squad will compete at the Rhodes
College Invitational. The regular season will conclude Oct. 13 with the
University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville.
The Last Chance Cross Country meet will be held Oct.
20th at Shelby Farms in Memphis and is open to any runner that has
not qualified to participate in the Sun Belt Conference meet, which will be
held in Bowling Green, Ky., Oct. 27.
The South Central Regional meet will take place Nov. 9
in Fayetteville. Louisville will host the 2012 NCAA Championships Nov. 17 in Louisville.
“We are really looking forward to the cross
country season getting started this fall,” ASU track and field coach Jim
Patchell said. “We have a strong group of returners and have added some quality
newcomers which should give us a chance to have a very good season.”
The ASU women’s team will be led by junior Kristina
Aubert, who finished fourth at the 2010 SBC meet and was named the league’s
Freshman of the Year that same season. Senior Samantha Salinas and sophomores
Tilda Helgesson and Heather Newberry will provide depth as well.
On the men’s side, senior David Mills is the Red Wolves’ top
returner and will lead a host of young talent that will try to build on last
year’s tenth-place finish at the SBC meet.
