JONESBORO,
Ark. (8/10/11) – The Arkansas State women’s soccer team picked up a
2-1 victory over Alabama-Birmingham in an exhibition match at the ASU Soccer
Complex on Friday afternoon.
The
two squads battled for three 30-minute periods and the Red Wolves ultimately prevailed
with the go ahead goal from freshman Loren Mitchell in the 84th
minute. Mitchell earned the goal after the Blazer goalkeeper misplayed a shot
and Mitchell found herself in position to put A-State ahead for good.
“It
is really good to see our team showing up and looking fit,” ASU soccer coach Tafadzwa
Ziyenge said. “Of course it was just a scrimmage game and we were experimenting
with a whole bunch of different things, but I am very pleased with where we are
so far.”
Sophomore
Jena’ Kelley scored ASU’s first goal in the 54th minute on a header
off of a corner kick from Kristina Rivera. UAB got the equalizer in the 59th
minute and the game remained tied until Mitchell’s go-ahead goal.
In
goal for ASU, Audrey Baldwin played 60 minutes and made seven saves. Freshman
Amanda Lee played the final 30 minutes of the match and recorded a save.
The
Red Wolves will travel to Bloomington, Ind., Friday, Aug. 17 to take on the
Hoosiers in its regular season opener. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
