PRIMM, Nev. (3/13/12) - The Arkansas State women's golf team claimed its second tournament championship this season on Tuesday, winning the Jackrabbit Invitational with a three-round 935 to edge out Oral Roberts by three strokes in the final standings.
Led by four players finishing among the top-25 individual leaders, the Red Wolves picked up their fourth top-three finish this year. ASU also won the Lady Red Wolf Classic on Oct. 17.
A-State shot a 316 and 308 for the first and second rounds, respectively, to end the tournament's opening day in third place and eight strokes behind leader Oral Roberts. However, the Red Wolves posted a final-round 311 to overtake ORU, which finished runner-up after shooting a 322.
ASU's combined 935 on the Primm Valley Golf Course was their third lowest three-round total this season. ASU finished ahead of 13 teams, including ORU, Northern Iowa, host North Dakota State, Houston Baptist, UMKC, Oakland, Southern Utah, Western Illinois, Drake, South Dakota State, South Dakota and North Dakota.
"I'm very proud of our team effort today," said ASU head coach M.J. Desbiens. "Our goal was achieved by learning from some of the mistakes we made yesterday. We showed dedication and mental toughness in windy conditions."
The Red Wolves were led by senior Jennifer Welch, who finished tied for fourth place with a combined 228 (79-73-76) that was her third lowest score this season. She finished second in par-3 scoring and had eight birdies that tied the fourth most of the tournament.
Sophomore Courtney Manning picked up her best finish this year, ending the tournament tied for 11th place with a 235 (78-81-76). Anna Carling finished tied for 16th place with a 237 (79-76-82), recording 33 pars that tied for the seventh most among all players. The junior collected her fifth top-25 finish this season.
Also finishing among the top-25 leaders for ASU was junior Jennifer Loiacano, who posted a 241 (81-78-82) that placed her tied for 22nd. Freshman Sarah Landry shot a 243 (80-86-77) to finish tied for 28th place, her second best finish of the season.
The Red Wolves return to action March 26-27 at the UALR Golf Classic, which is their final tune-up before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament that is slated for April 17-18.
