HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (7/28/12) - A record-breaking seventy-two teams made up of 144 players began competition Saturday at the 28th Annual A-State Classic, a two-day tournament being hosted by the Arkansas State Athletics Department at the Hot Springs Country Club.
Liberty Bank is the title sponsor for the event, which began with a single round played on the Arlington course with the leaders emerging for nine different flights, including the championship flight that has eight teams all within three strokes of each other. The opening-day festivities ended with a reception, silent and live auction and dinner.
The proceeds from the tournament go to the Red Wolf Club, which serves as the principal fundraising arm of the ASU Athletic Department.
"We're so proud to have had the largest crowd in the tournament's history on the course and at the dinner," said Director of the Red Wolf Club Doug Doggett. "The tremendous support from central Arkansas is just a small indication of the excitement spreading state-wide for Arkansas State Athletics."
The Red Wolf Club is the primary development arm of Arkansas State Athletics. For more than 50 years the club has provided educational opportunities to student-athletes, improved athletic facilities and enhanced donor experiences at athletic events. The Red Wolf Club can be contacted at 870-972-2401, or more information about the club can be found online at TheRedWolfClub.com.
Arkansas State head football coach Gus Malzahn and Randy Woodard finished the first round with a 62, matching the team of David Gary and Jim Wagner for the best score of the day at 10 under par.
