JONESBORO, Ark. (8/28/17) – Arkansas State juniors Carlisa May and Ellie Watkins were named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Setter of the Week, respectively, for their performances during the first weekend of the 2017 season the league office announced Monday.
A native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., May began the 2017 campaign impressively by earning a spot on the Bluegrass Battle All-Tournament team. She registered 45 kills for a 4.50 per set average and also added 22 digs, six blocks, and an ace. Her best match came in the 3-1 win over Cincinnati when she tallied 21 kills in four sets. She had nine kills versus No. 14 Kentucky and added another 15 in the match against No. 23 Utah.
This honor for May is her 11th career weekly award and fourth career SBC Offensive Player of the Week accolade.
Watkins, who transferred from Pittsburgh, was impressive in her first three matches at A-State. The Weldon Spring, Mo., native handed out 111 assists for an 11.10 per set average. Additionally, she added 13 kills on a .520 hitting percentage, 18 digs, four blocks, and three aces. Her best match came in the 3-1 win over Cincinnati when she handed out 53 assists. She dished out 28 against Kentucky and 30 versus Utah.
A-State began the 2017 campaign with a win over Cincinnati and losses to No. 14 Kentucky and No. 23 Utah. Arkansas State returns to action Tuesday, Aug. 29 against Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
