LEXINGTON, Ky. (1/13/18) – Arkansas State track and field sprinter Jaylen Bacon broke his own school record in the 200 meter dash to highlight two individual titles on the day and the Red Wolves completed the Kentucky Invitational with 14 top-10 finishes.
“We didn’t have the entire squad today, but those we travelled had a good meet. It’s still early, so we do expect improvement. We had several personal bests today which is a good start to this season.”
Bacon clocked a time of 21.14 seconds in the 200-meter dash to break his previous best of 21.16 seconds he posted at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships last season. He made his season debut in the short sprints and clocked the fourth-best time nationally with a 6.65 second 60-meter dash prelim. Bacon claimed top honors in the final with a time of 6.66 seconds to claim his 31st career first place finish.
Jamil Peeples was the top collegiate finisher, second overall, in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds. Darragh May cleared 1.76m (5-09.25) to finish second by way of a first place tiebreaker in the women’s high jump. Itamar Levi tied for third in the men’s shot pot with a mark of 18.05m (59-02.75).
Others earning top-10 finishes were; De’Airis Weakley (6th – 60m dash | 7.61), Matthew Keown (7th – pole vault | 4.83m/15-10.00), Brianna Hardiman (8th – 400m dash | 56.78), David Phillips (9th – high jump | 2.05m/6-08.75), Cameron Stalnaker (9th – pole vault | 4.83m/15-10.00), Calea Carr (10th – weight throw | 17.15m/56-03.25), Calea Carr (10th – shot put | 14.30m/46-11.00), Nick Hilson (10th – 400m dash | 49.93), Jonah Wiley (10th – long jump 6.81m/22-04.25)
A-State heads to Birmingham, Ala., next weekend for the Samford Invitational. The meet gets underway Friday, January 19. The Red Wolves then host their second indoor meet at First National Bank Arena Jan. 26-27.
