Black Wins Red Wolves Series With 16-11 Victory Over Red

JONESBORO, Ark. (10-29-2009) -  The ASU baseball Black team jumped out to a 10-0 lead after four innings of play, then withstood a late Red team rally to hold on for a 16-11 victory Wednesday afternoon in game four of the Red Wolves World Series at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.  With the victory, the Black team won the best-of-five series 3-1.

Junior Tyler Smith went 4-for-6 with seven RBI's to lead the Black team on the day.  Smith slugged a home run, one double and a pair of triples, including a two-run triple in the first inning that helped the Black team plate five runs in the frame.  Smith's home run, a two-run shot, came in the third and helped the Black team extend its lead to 9-0.

After the Black team added a run in the fourth, the Reds scored six in the bottom of the fifth, with freshmen Brandon Milhouse and Ryan Emery both driving in runs in the inning to help cut the Black lead to 10-6.

The Black team answered with two runs in the sixth, but the Red team rallied again, scoring once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to cut the deficit to 12-10.  An RBI double from Smith in the ninth helped the Black team cross the plate to extend its lead to 16-10, and a final run from the Red team in the bottom of the inning set the final at 16-11.

In addition to the big day from Smith, the Black team also got a 3-for-5, 3-RBI effort from freshman Thomas Lundborg.  Senior Josh DeMoney went 3-for-4 with an RBI, senior Giovanni Garcia was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs-batted-in and junior Todd Baumgartner went 2-for-6 with an RBI for the Black team.

For the Red team, Emery went 3-for-6 with three RBI's, and Milhouse was 2-for-6 and drove in four runs on the day.

Junior Wes Dagestad picked up the win for the Black team, giving up one run in one and one-third innings on the mound.  Junior Brad Allen earned the save, giving up one unearned run in the ninth.  Freshman Scotty Jameson started and gave up six runs (four earned) in four innings of work, junior Drew Benes gave up three runs in 1.2 innings and freshman Josh Fleming worked one inning and did not give up a run.
