JONESBORO,
Ark. (8/22/10) - The Arkansas State women's soccer team opened regular-season
action with a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Tennessee-Martin Sunday at the
ASU Soccer Complex.
The
Red Wolves outshot the Skyhawks 18-16 including taking 12 shots on goal to UTM's
nine.
"It
just goes to show you that soccer is a game of mistakes. Sometimes things go
right and sometimes some things don't go right," said ASU head coach Tafadzwa
Ziyenge. "You don't always get the result that you want but that's life. One
thing that I told our girls is let's not put all our eggs in one basket.
Everything is not dependant on this opening game. If anything, the truth of the
matter is that in the opening game that is when you are going to show your
weakness. As time goes we are going to try to cover up for those weaknesses we
showed today."
Junior
forward Kara Nitti took a feed from junior forward Michele Clark and one-timed
a shot into the back of the net from the right side to the near post to even
the score at 1-1 for ASU in the 35th minute (34:41).
Sophomore
forward Tory Pitts then gave ASU the lead, 2-1, when she fired in a shot from
the right side to the far post off a pass from junior Kelsey Finders in the 64th
minute (63:02).
A
minute and ten-seconds later, Rosaelia Loza scored her second goal of the match
for UTM, unassisted on an open net. The goal evened the match and ultimately
forced the overtime and the tie. Earlier, Loza scored the first goal of the
match in the 25th minute (24:01).
Pitts
led all players with five shots, four of which were on goal, while Lyndsey
Patterson and Ashley McMurtry also recorded three shots each for the Red Wolves.
Junior
goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus played 68:14 in goal for ASU making four saves.
Sophomore Susan Brown played the remaining 41:46 making three saves.
Melissa
Govea led the Skyhawks with three shots, three of which were on goal.
Arkansas
State returns to action on Aug. 27th when they travel to Arkansas
Pine-Bluff. Game time against UAPB is set for 5 p.m.
